In fact, many proposed protocols for MANETs exhibit worst-casebehavior when an intended communication partner is currently not present. This thesisaddresses the problem of detecting the presence of nodes in MANETs and provideslightweight solutions to the problem. As our major contribution, we introduce soft-state presence detection. It uses a Bloom lter-based beaconing mechanism to aggregate and distribute information about thepresence of network nodes.
