Description
The following paper deals with problems related to Capsian radiocarbon dates, their interpretation and their influence on evolutionary cultural models. Systematic revision of established data underlines the limits of the typological approach, the complexity of Capsian stratigraphy and the discrepancy associated with radiocarbon dates, particularly those obtained from land snail shells. From this discussion, we notice that the contemporaneity thesis - Camps ' model - which is the most commonly accepted at present, is built on some problematic radiometric dates and cultural attributions. In this way, the necessity to undertake critical data revision is justified by providing new elements for the discussion on the relations between Capsian subdivisions. Finally, we propose a new interpretation of Capsian chronology and its implications for the understanding of the Epipalaeolithic cultural evolution in the Maghreb.
