Das ursprung¨ liche Ziel dieser Theorie ist die Bereitstellung mathema-tischer Modelle zur Untersuchung des simultanen Zellwachstums fadenartiger Or-ganismen. Da L-Systeme als eine Art von Ersetzungssystemen definiert sind, sindihre erzeugten Sprachen, d.h. die Mengen der durch Zeichenketten beschriebenenOrganismen, ebenfalls Gegenstand der Theorie der formalen Sprachen.
