Methodology for Parameterisation ofLarge Scale Network SimulationsKai Below2003Methodology for Parameterisation ofLarge Scale Network SimulationsVom Promotionsausschuss derTechnischen Universität Hamburg Harburgzur Erlangung des akademischen GradesDoktor Ingenieurgenehmigte DissertationvonKai Belowaus Hamburg20031. Gutachter (referee): Prof. Dr. Ulrich Killat2. (referee): Prof. Dr. Volker TurauTag der mündlichen Prüfung (date of oral examination): 27.11.2003AcknowledgementI would like to thank my supervisor Prof. Dr. Ulrich Killat for giving me the chance towork in his department on the given topic and for various technical and non technicaldiscussions. I owe him lots of gratitude for generously supporting my research.I would like to thank all colleagues of the department “Communication Networks” of theTUHH for the good cooperation. Special thanks to Lorenzo Battaglia, Benjamin Forgeauand Sebastian Zimmermann. I would also like to thank “my” students who gave me thechance to learn to become a supervisor.Last, but not least, I would like to thank my family for their love and encouragement:my parents, my wife and my children.vAbstractNetwork providers are confronted with the optimisation or extension of existing net works. This leads to new challenges for simulation based network dimensioning. Thefirst challenge is the realistic simulation of the existing network, where topology in formation and traffic measurements have to be considered.
