This workshop was organized within the framework of the European Coopera
tion in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST) and spon
sored by the Commission of the European Communities, the Federal Depart
ment of the Interior of Switzerland and the Institute of Biotechnology of
the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.
Since 1980, a research project on "Production and Feeding of Single Cell
Protein (SCP)" (COST Project 83/84) has been implemented under a Memor
andum of Understanding signed by Belgium, Denmark, Federal Republic of
Germany, France, Ireland, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland,
Turkey and Yugoslavia. The three-year programme has led to a better
understanding of the research potential in the participating countries
and shown their ability to cooperate in this field.
Three workshops have been held during the project :
The project commenced with a workshop in Jülich from 15-16 October 1979,
which indicated the state-of-the-art in the research areas to be investi
gated.
The workshop from 30 September to 2 October 1981 in Braunschweig brought
together experts on chemistry and the structure of lignocellulosic
materials and their modification by treatment and rumen microbiologists.
An evaluation of promising new approaches was made and gaps in present
knowledge were identified. The recommendations formed the basis for the
definition of future work in a programme proposal for a follow-up of the
COST-project.
The aim of the COST 83/84 workshop reported in this volume, held in
Zurich from 13 to 15 April 1983, was to report on the activities of the
past three years and to draw up evaluations and recommendations for
future collaboration. Furthermore, guidelines for the Final Report, of
the COST 83/84 programme were settled.
The response to this workshop, in which over one hundred scientists from
fifteen countries participated, and the number and quality of the papers
showed the significance of the subject treated.
The workshop revealed that both technical and economic aspects have to be
considered when strategies for the production of protein for animal feed
from agricultural and forestry wastes are evaluated. VI
1. Lignocellulosic Materials
Progress has been made since the last workshop in Braunschweig in 1981,
but the development of simple processes for farm application is not yet
possible. More scientific knowledge will be necessary before less
expensive and simpler pre-treatment and hydrolysis processes can be
developed.
2. Whey
In contrast to the above mentioned topic, scientific background in the
field of whey upgrading is available, but the economy of such a process
depends on the conditions of each particular case. Only case studies
will throw light on the economic aspects of such a process.
3. Nutritive Value and Toxicology
It has been shown that the nutritive value of lignocellulosic and whey
SCP is excellent. Toxicological investigations do not give any evidence
against the use of the produced protein as animal feed.
The conclusions of the Round Table discussion consisted of evaluations
and recommendations to be submitted to the Commission of the European
Communities, and in essence are as summarized above.
A proposal for a follow-up programme has already been submitted (COST 84
bis).
The full texts of the review papers and summaries of the short communi
cations are collected within the present volume.
The organizers thank all the participants for having contributed their
reports and for taking part in the discussions which led to the success
of the workshop.
