Introduction National data collection in adult cardiac surgery is well established and has evolved to include risk models and more recently public reporting of outcome data. Implicit in this initiative is the need for accurate data and a proposal for data validation has been made in the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (SCTS) Fifth National Adult Cardiac Surgical Database Report 2003.
