Description
Settled on clay shoal along an ancient ford of the Saône, the site of Gué des Piles in Chalon-sur-Saône is at the moment under 5 m of water. Discovered in 1982 during subaquatic explorations, it has since then undergone four excavations campaigns. Eight hundred forty square metres have been cleared, i.e. about 60% of the total surface of the settlement, and five hundred stakes have been surveyed. The archaeological layer, very much deteriorated by erosion, was preserved over a hundred square metres ; a homogeneous set of objects were discovered, well-dated from the transition between the late Bronze Age IIIa and IIIb. Although not numerous, remains made of perishable materials are present on the site. The study of the structures shows that originally the habitat consisted of four rows of parallel constructions, set up on piles and orientated along the axis of the river. After the accidental destruction of the two external rows, the erection of fence seems to have been undertaken in order to protect the site against the impact of pieces of wood carried by the current at flood times.
