Après avoir longtemps sombré dans l'isolement et enduré l'écartèlement imposé par la colonisation, il est normal de voir le Maroc entamer une action culturelle qui s'est effectuée dans une atmosphère de relatif bouillonnement politique voire de libération totale entreprise par la bourgeoisie nationale à partir de la deuxième guerre mondiale. Cette période constitue donc le commencement d'un réveil qui vise l'indépendance avant tout. Quant à la culture elle est restée paralysée dans ses domaines essentiels à la suite des problèmes qui ébranlaient tout le pays (enseignement défectueux-Dahir berbère-marasme économique etc.). Cependant de 1936 à 1956 un effort a été vers la création d'oeuvres littéraires par certains auteurs. Mais ces derniers ne faisaient que galvauder un nationalisme désuet et bourgeois tout en s'abritant sous les toits rassurants d'un passé glorieux ou d'une conviction religieuse transquillisante, sinon réformiste. Aussi, bien que j'aie de nombreuses raisons d'être relativement optimiste sur la vitalité des autres genres littéraires, sur leur retentissement et même sur leur qualité esthétique ou idéologique, qui leur permettent de concurrencer quelques créations étrangères, il convient toutefois de dire que le roman marocain d'expression arabe patauge encore et souffre d'un malaise terrible ; ses artisans apprennent toujours à le discipliner et à le fixer sur une forme parfaitement intelligente. Il n'était guère au temps du protectorat qu'une histoire simplette relatant des faits belliqueux (la reine Khnata-La Belle d Asila . . .) ou une autobiographie qui tendait à faire apparaître dans un style romantique le déroulement singulier de la vie dans deux mondes opposés (Maroc - Angleterre) comme l'a fait Abdelmjid Ben Jelloun dans une œuvre intitulée dans l'enfance. De plus, le roman marocain est resté depuis l'indépendance obscurément fidèle aux formes orientales archaïques du début du siècle actuel et dont le style se range souvent au magasin des accessoires linguistiques périmés ; quant aux thèmes ils se limitent à i'Histoire et à la libération sans que les romanciers expliquent d'une manière artistique les mobiles et les motifs des situations décrites dans leurs œuvres ou dégagent l'acuité des problèmes politiques économiques ou sociaux (Ghellab et sa trilogie). Et bien que certains jeunes auteurs (Zafzaf — Rabi Moubarek-Allouch) essaient de profiter des ressources esthétiques encore inexploitées, et de leur expérience en tant que nouvellistes d'avant-garde, leur talent a besoin de mûrir pour atteindre la modernité qu'on exige aujourd'hui dans l'écriture romanesque. En conséquence le seul souffle créateur dont on dispose actuellement est le roman d'expression française qui suscite un remous d'admiration chez les lecteurs avertis, et qui s'avère comme un apport important à notre action littéraire en dépit de la folklorité de certains écrivains comme Sefrioui, ou la rupture d'autres avec leur société comme Driss Cheraïbi.
It is not surprising that Morocco, after having been isolated for so long and torn asunder by colonization, should, after world war II, at a time of relative political effervescence during which the national bourgeoisie was striving for complete liberation, have launched its own cultural policy. The post-war period, therefore, constitutes the beginning of an awakening aiming primarily at independence. Yet, because of the problems shaking the entire country (a defective system of education, Berber dahir, economic stagnation), hardly any progress was made in the cultural field. From 1936 to 1956, however, efforts were made by some authors to create literary works. Yet, these authors did little more than popularize an obsolete form of bourgeois nationalism while sheltering themselves either behind a glorious and reassuring past or, sometimes, comforting, indeed, reformist religious beliefs. Therefore although I have good reason to feel relatively optimistic about the vitality of other literary genres, the extent of their appeal and even their aesthetic or ideological value, which allow them to compare favorably with certain foreign works, one must admit that the Moroccan novel written in Arabic is still wading in the mire and suffers from a chronic ailment : its' craftsmen have yet to master its technique and render it fully intelligible. At the time of the Protectorate, the novel was usually woven around a silly plot based on feats of arms (e.g. Queen Khnata, the Fair one of Asila . . .) or was autobiographical and tended to contrast, after the romantic fashion, an individual's life in two distinct worlds (Moroco-England) as did Abdel- mjid Ben Jellun in a book entitled In Childhood. Also, the Moroccan novel, form some obscure reason, has, since Independence, confined itself to archaic oriental forms dating back to the turn of the century and characterized by antiquated stylistic devices. While restricting themselves to the themes of history and Independence alonej novelists fail to offer any artistic insight into the forces and motives underlying the situations described or to give any analysis of acute political, economic or social problems (Ghellab and his trilogy). If some young authors like Zafzaf, Rabi Moubarek and Alloud are trying to exploit yet untapped aesthetic resources and to avail themselves of their experience as vanguard writers of short stories, their talent certainly needs ripening before they can achieve that modernness that is now required of writers of novels. It would seem therefore that the only creative trend now existing in Morocco consists of the novels written in French, which arouse admiration among the best critics and are an invaluable contribution to our literay action despite the insistence on folk-lore of writers like Sefrioui (Sefriwi), or the divorce from their own society of writers like Driss Cheraibi (Shraybe).
