Juli 2010 Berlin 2010 D 83 To my beloved parents and in memory of my grandfather Abstract Enrique Meza García Influence of alloying elements on the microstructure and mechanical properties of extruded Mg-Zn based alloys In the present work, the influence of the additions of Zinc, Zirconium and Cerium-Mischmetall on the casting, indirect extrusion processing, microstructural development and resulting mechanical properties of magnesium and magnesium alloys were investigated. It was found that grain size of the cast alloys is controlled by a grain growth factor (Q) mechanism. The importance of Q factor is related to the possibility of predicting the grain size of the cast billet, a parameter which influenced strongly the deformation response of the alloy during extrusion.
