Mile Djurdjevic Promotionskolloquium am 19.03.2010 Preface This Thesis was done at the University of Magdeburg, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, during my three years stay and involvement as a researcher at the Institute for Manufacturing Technologies and Quality Assurance. My PhD Thesis is focused on the solidification behaviour and the parameters controlling the solidification features of Al-Si-Cu alloy with special emphasis on the secondary dendrite arm spacing. Throughout the three years period of my PhD work, the results have been published in national and international journals as well as in national and international conference proceedings. The research and experimental work was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rüdiger Bähr. It is the greatest honour to be able to work under supervision of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rüdiger Bähr.
