Januar 20112AbstractIn recent years, dilute quantum degenerate gases interacting through the long-range and anisotropicdipole-dipole interaction have attracted much attention. At first, magnetic dipolar effects have been52 87 7unambiguously demonstrated in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates of Cr, Rb, and Li. In addi-40 87tion, further fascinating possibilities have been recently opened, as fermionic K Rb molecules withan electric dipole moment of about 0.5 Debye were brought close to quantum degeneracy by usingstimulated Raman adiabatic passage to efficiently convert these heteronuclear molecules into theirrovibrational ground state. Due to a large electric dipole moment, the dipole-dipole interaction be-tween such molecules might be up to 10,000 times larger than in magnetic atomic systems. In thisthesis we theoretically investigate the static and the dynamic properties of polarized dipolar quantumgases at zero temperature.
