Thorsten SchultzPreface IIIPrefaceThis dissertation thesis presents the major results of my research performed between 1999 and2004 at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems inMagdeburg (Germany). I had the privilege to be one of the first researchers of this newinstitute, and the first assistant to my scientific mentor Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kai Sundmacher, towhom I owe my whole scientific career so far (without him calling me to Magdeburg I wouldnot be a scientist at all). Helping to build up something totally new has been a unique andvery exciting experience, even though especially in the first years it often meant spendingmore time on organisational rather than on scientific matters, like e.g. planning wholelaboratories and assisting other new colleagues while the infrastucture was still in its buildup.
