They have great potentials for further highlyintegrated plasmonic devices, but are difficult to excite. Thisthesis demonstrates the coupling of light from the far field tohighly confined plasmonic gap modes via connected nanoanten-nas, both numerically and experimentally. Propagating surfaceplasmon modes can either be detected in the far field by using across polarization setup or in the near field by a scanning near-field opticalmicroscope(SNOM). Gapplasmonic modes aresuc-cessfullyprobedbyfocusingGaussianopticalbeamsonaloadedoptical antenna. In addition to probing propagating plasmonicmodes in a waveguide, the excitation of a plasmonic nano-rodresonatoris realizedby anincidentelectronbeam.
