HuberiAbstractThe purpose of this work is to investigate the role of electron-electron interaction andcon nement in disordered two-dimensional systems with a strong perpendicular mag-netic eld.In these systems, the integer quantum Hall effect is observed. The kinetic energyof the electrons is quantized into equidistant Landau levels, which are broadened intobands due to the presence of a disorder potential. If the Fermi energy is in the tail of2Landau bandi, the Hall conductance exhibits a plateau of magnitudee =h¢i, whereasthe magnetoconductance vanishes. This phenomenon is well understood within a single-particle picture as a second order phase transition between localized electronic states atthe band edges and extended states in the center, governed by a power law dependenceof the localization length with respect to the energy distance to the band center with anuniversal static critical exponent.
