Oktober 2010 Preface and Outline This thesis was composed at the University of Göttingen (Soil Science of Temperate Ecosystems) within the research training group 1397, “Regulation of soil organic matter and nutrient turnover in organic agriculture”, at the University of Kassel/Witzenhausen and funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Research activities in the field took place at the long-term fertilization experiment at the Institute of Biodynamic Research (IDBF), in Darmstadt. Cooperating partners were Dr. Joachim Raupp and Meike Oltmanns. The cumulative dissertation is based on three manuscripts to which the PhD candidate predominantly contributed as the first author and one article to which she contributed as co-author.
