Accumulation of ceramides in aging hearts may play a role in the proapoptotic shifting of Bcl-x splicing and thus accelerates cell death as well as the aging process. This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of ceramides on the viability of the cardiomyoblast cells (H9C2), the type of cell death that may result from ceramides treatment, whether they affect the balance of the pro and antiapoptotic Bcl-2 family members and mitochondrial function.
