With our basic model weexplore the possibility to sort dumbbells with respect to their size using a two-dimensional periodic potential. It turns out that the purely di usive behaviorof a dumbbell in this structured landscape is dominated by the ratio of twocharacteristic length scales, namely the wavelength of the potential and thesize of the dumbbellb [1]. We explain why the di usion constant in the potentialplane shows a pronounced local maximum around =b 3=2.
