Thompsondedicated to my daughter SophiaAbstractIn addition to the optical detection system used by the ANTARES detector, aproposal was made to include an acoustic system consisting of several modi edANTARES storeys to investigate the feasibility of building and operating anacoustic particle detection system in the deep sea and at the same time performan extensive study of the acoustic properties of the deep sea environment. Inparticular, a profound knowledge of the acoustic noise at the detector site is ofeminent importance for judging the reconstruction capabilities of such a systemfor the acoustic signals created by neutrinos. Thus, a system of sensors witha high sensitivity in and around the frequency range of relevance for neutrinodetection (circa 5 to 50 kHz) and at the same time with an intrinsic noise lowenough to make the measurement of the acoustic noise possible even at lowestsea states was needed.
