Their use in nuclear medicine couldofferhighersensitivity andbetterspatialresolutionthanexisting mechanically-collimatedgamma cameras, leading toa reduction oftheradiationdose given toa patient. AComp-toncameraconsistsbasicallyoftwodetectors: ascatterdetector, whereComptonscatter-ing takes place, and a photoabsorber, where the scattered photons are absorbed. Siliconpixel detectors are the best choice for a scatter medium since they provide good positionresolution, good energy resolution at room temperature and a relatively small Dopplerbroadening effect. Scintillation detectors are preferred for the use as a photoabsorberbecause of their greater stopping power.
