Design of a 300 mK–14 T scanningtunneling microscopy system andcharacterization of quantum Hall systemswith respect to Rashba spin splitting, exchange enhancement and Coulomb gap.Von der Fakultät für Mathematik, Informatik und Naturwissenschaften derRWTH Aachen University zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades einesDoktors der Naturwissenschaften genehmigte Dissertationvorgelegt vonDipl.-Phys. The first part describes the design of anultra-high vacuum system (UHV) for measurements with a scanning tunnelingmicroscope (STM) at a base temperature of about 300 mK and in magnetic fieldsof up to 14 T. The system consists of two main UHV chambers for sample andSTM tip preparations and a large cryostat with an inner single-shot helium-3cooling stage, holding the home-built STM. Besides commercially obtained ionsource, LEED/Auger system, and mass spectrometer, the available instrumentsfor preparation include different sample heaters especially designed for this sys-tem. These instruments are shown in detail as well as the STM, which main fea-tures are a tip-exchange mechanism and a coarse sample positioning stage.
