StanevZweitgutachter: Prof. Dr. Jorg-Olaf Wolff¨Tag der Disputation: 08.07.2011AbstractWhile observations, on the one hand, are often too sparse in time and space and, therefo-re, do not resolve enough of the important information to enable a deeper understandingof oceanographic processes, there are, on the other hand, several difficulties in developingrealistic ocean models. The general concept of data assimilation aims to overcome someof the limitations in the estimates of the current ocean state derived from ocean modelingand observations by providinga reasonable combination of both data sources. Today dataassimilation is already widely used by ocean modelers and a broad range of sophisticatedmethods exist. However, the more studies about the application of data assimilation indifferent ocean regions are available the more it becomes apparent that the configurati-on of the existing observation network is often insufficient for the requirements of dataassimilation.
