The energy stored in light is used in photosynthetic active complexes t o producean outward pointing electron/proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane of chloroplast s. Thisenergisation of the membrane is a prerequisite for actiFve AFTP synthase. ATP synthase pumps o 1protons back across the thylakoid membrane into the chloroplast. During this translocation process,the electrical energy of the gradient is transformed into the mechanical energy of a rot ation. Thisrotation takes place in the membrane part F and is translated via a stalk into a membrane ass ociatedopart F which carries the catalytic active sites.
