Examples of such applications range from onlinemonitoringandanalysisofsensordatafortrafficmanagementandfactoryautomationto financial applications tracking stock ticker data. Traditional database systems aredeemed inadequate to support high volume, low latency stream processing becausequeriesareexpectedtoruncontinuouslyandreturnnewanswersasnewdataarrives,withouttheneedtostoredatapersistently. Thegoalofthisthesisistodevelopasolidandpowerfulfoundationforprocessingcontinuousqueriesoverdatastreams. Resourcerequirementsarekeptinboundsbyrestrictingtheevaluationofcontinuousqueriestoslidingwindowsoverthepotentiallyunboundeddatastreams.
