A study of theisotope shift allows the extraction of the change in the mean square nuclear charge radius asa measure for nuclear size. Odd-proton or odd-neutron number isotopes have a non-vanishingtotal nuclear angular momentum (spin) and therefore exhibit a hyperfine structure in the elec-tronic transition. The detailed analysis of this property yields the nuclear spin I, the nucleardipole moment , and in special cases also the electric quadrupole moment Q. Collinear laserspectroscopy combines this experimental method with the spectroscopy on fast ion or atombeams, which is ideally suited for the study of short-lived isotopes and can be readily adaptedto specific experimental needs.
