Archaeological research cooperation between Cyprus and Lyon was established 30 years ago by V. Karageorghis and J. Pouilloux. This was accomplished in two phases. From 1964 until the war in 1974, French from the Courby Institute and Cypriot archaeologists collaborated on excavations carried out at Salamis in order to clarify certain aspects of that city, which was often the metropolis of Cyprus for over 17 centuries (11th century BC - 8th century AD). The period 1974-1994 witnessed the development of new French programs – excavations at Amathus, Khirokitia, Kition-Bamboula, and ethno-archaeological studies (pottery workshops, traditional villages...) – under the auspices of the Maison de l'Orient’s Center of Cypriot Archaeology at the Courby Institute, ER 17-CRA (CNRS), GREMMO (CNRS), in collaboration with the French Archaeological School at Athens and the Department of Oriental Antiquities of the Louvre, as well as with the programs of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus.
During this period, research work (theses) on the archaeology and history of Cyprus was sent to the University of Lyon 2, by both Cyprus and Lyon researchers. With the founding of the new University of Cyprus, we are entering into a new phase of scientific cooperation, which will take its place in a wide international arena.
