Inatomic physics, this can be achieved e ciently by laser cooling. Conven-tional methods to laser cool atoms are based on repeated optical pumpingcycles followed by spontaneous emission of a photon from the atom. Suchpumping schemes can only be applied to certain atomic species, which havea closed optical transition. Drawbacks caused by photons spontaneouslyemitted from the atom can be avoided in the strongly coupled atom-cavitysystem in which energy and entropy can be removed by photons lost fromthe cavity.This thesis reports on the rst observation of this cooling mechanismwhich does not rely on spontaneous emission.
