April 2010iiAbstractWhen listening to relevant acoustic signals (e.g., speech) in a complex acoustic en-vironment (e.g., a cocktail party), the human auditory system can utilize, amongother cues, frequency selectivity and binaural hearing to separate wanted fromunwanted sound components. This thesis investigates how these two cues inter-act by measuring and modeling frequency selectivity in monaural and binauralconditions for both normal-hearing (NH) and hearing-impaired (HI) subjects.The principal experimental paradigm in measurement and simulation is thenotched-noise experiment. Though this is the classical experiment to investigatefrequency selectivity (de Boer and Bos, 1962; Patterson, 1976) it was hardly (Hallet al., 1983) conducted in a dichotic condition before.
