The deterioration of lubri-cants is revealed by changes of their infrared spectra. For purposes of on-line mon-itoring a Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was combined withthe Attenuated Total Re ectance (ATR) measurement technique using infraredtransmitting b ers. The proposed set-up enables direct access to the investigatedsubstances and is characterized by its high measurement sensitivity. The spectro-scopic results enabled the development of a novel, robust and industry-suitableATR-sensor to monitoring of lubricant while in use.
