In the late 50's and early 60% the Inuit people of Canada settled down in permanent villages under various pressures. One of the major changes related to this move to the settled way of life was the shift from igloos — and summer tents — to permanent houses, at first very simple one-room units called match-box houses and later multiple-bedroom ones. Houses are a powerful expression of cultural values. Identity is first nurtered inside of them, and one learns there the basic spatial rules of his community. Therefore, one can expect exposure to an architecture carrying values of an alien culture to have important impacts on its dwellers. Yet so far, both geographers and Arctic anthropologists have neglected domestic spaces issues, the former not feeling at ease with the micro-scale and the later focusing their attention on the newly formed communities, at the settlement scale. This paper discusses the results of a study conducted among the Inuinnait people (Western Central Arctic) about the way they have been dealing, for over 30 years now, with the shift from vernacular dwellings to social housing ones. Information was collected through both observation over nearly 15 years (1986-2000) of Inuit's modem homes and their spatial organization, and formal semi-directive interviews conducted with elderly women — who experienced the shift as mothers — in the spring of 1998. The research revealed that adaptation has been more than difficult, but also that, if the Inuit culture is put at risk in the new dwellings, it is inside of them too that the Inuit are creating mediations between their culture in transition and the Western one. Building from this case study, the conclusion insists on the importance of domestic spaces as geographical spaces through which we can get a better understanding of the dynamics of cultures and identifies.
Entre 1955 et 1968, les Inuit du Canada se sont sédentarisés dans des villages permanents, et sont passés dans ce mouvement des maisons de neige à pièce unique— les iglous — aux maisons individuelles à plusieurs chambres mises à leur disposition par le programme de logement social du gouvernement fédéral. Jusqu'à présent, la plupart des géographes ont négligé l'étude des espaces domestiques, tout comme d'ailleurs les anthropologues travaillant sur l'Arctique. Pourtant, il s'agit là d'espaces géographiques et culturels de première importance. À travers l'examen du cas des Inuinnait (groupe inuit de l'Arctique Central Occidental), cet article étudie les effets de l'exposition d'un groupe culturel à une architecture domestique conçue suivant des concepts et valeurs propres à une autre culture. Il présente les résultats d'une recherche fondée sur près de 1 5 ans d'observation des intérieurs contemporains des Inuit (1986-2000), complétés par une série d'entretiens semi-directifs conduits au printemps 1998 auprès de femmes âgées ayant vécu la sédentarisation alors qu'elles étaient déjà adultes et mères. L'article analyse l'ampleur du traumatisme culturel et les difficultés rencontrées encore aujourd'hui par les Inuit pour s'approprier une architecture étrangère, ainsi que les modalités de résistance aux normes d'organisation de l'espace domestique fortement suggérées par l'architecture elle-même. La dimension géographique des espaces domestiques est alors soulignée.
