Study on vehicle transport and preparation charges for 2008 July 2008 1. Context The 2008 study on transport and preparation charges was conducted by CAA-Quebec Automotive Advisory Services between May and June 2008, and covered all 2008 models available on the Canadian and U.S. markets. In conducting the study, CAA-Quebec sought to provide an opportunity for its members to learn more about the charges levied by automakers so that they can make more informed decisions about new vehicle purchases. 2. New feature An interesting feature of this year’s study is that it allows consumers to compare charges imposed on Canadian vehicle buyers to those paid by their U.S. counterparts. Following are the key findings of the study: • Overall, transport and preparation charges in effect in Canada are considerably higher than in the United States. The discrepancy ranges from 31% to 61%. • Several automakers increased their charges over those of 2007. In some cases, the charges were nearly 10% higher. • A trend is emerging: transport and preparation charges have risen constantly in recent years. • In 2008, Toyota was the only manufacturer to lower its transport and preparation charges. • Some automakers require consumers to pay the same charges regardless of whether the vehicle is assembled in Canada, the U.S. or Europe, while others adjust the amount depending on the country of ...
