20th century out-of-commerce works in France Christian Roblin Brussels, 4th December 2013 livresindisponibles@la-sofia.org / www.la-sofialivresindisponibles.org 20th century out-of-print books Aim of the scheme: to ensure that works published prior to 1 January 2001: - that have not yet entered the public domain (70 years after the death of the author), - and which are no longer being retailed by a publisher in any format, → are once more available, this time in digital format. ReLIRE The list of books affected by these arrangements - is compiled by the French National Library (BNF) - includes some 500,000 books ( over 10 years). Annual publication: 21 March - ReLIRE : Registre des Livres Indisponibles en Réédition Electronique - Catalogue of out-of-print books re-published digitally. Mis Juliette Dutour will cover this aspect later. Objections - Within six months of the publication of the list, authors and publishers can object to the inclusion of their books in the collective management scheme. - It’s up to SOFIA, the approved CMO, to process statements. - Applicants are not required to justify their objection. - They must be able to establish: - their identity (for authors), - their status as rights holders (for heirs and successors) - or their status as “owners of rights” to hard copy publication (for publishers). schedule - If the author raises objections, he is not required to publish at a later date.
