2004 Email Subscription Spam Risk Audit ByArialSoftware(www.ArialSoftware.com) Duringthefirstsixmonthsof2004,ArialSoftwaresecretlyauditedtheemailsubscriptionpracticesof1,057prominentorganizations(includingmanyFortune500andpopularInternetfirms)bysubscribingtotheiremailnewsletters.ArialSoftwareresearchersthentrackedtheactualemailpracticesandbehaviorsofeachorganization,notingsubscriptionhandling,privacyprotectionpractices,spammingbehavior,unsubscribehandling,andothercharacteristics. Theseresults,summarizedinthisexclusivereport,representthemostcomprehensiveauditofbusiness-to-consumer(B2C)emailpracticeseverconducted.Thisreportrevealssomesurprisinginformationthatchallengescommonlyheldbeliefsaboutemailnewsletters,corporateresponsibility,andspamrisk. Spam Doesn t Come From Subscribing To Email ’ Newsletters Asendusers,whendecidingwhethertosubscribeouremailaddresstoanannouncementlistforawellknowncompany,weallsharethesamebasicquestion:“Isthisgoingtoresultinmebeingspammed?” Thisfearofinvitingspamcausesmanyofustoavoidsubscribingtoemailnewslettersatall.Yetasthisstudyreveals, thefearisunfounded .Aftersubscribingto1,057onlinenewslettersrepresentingawidevarietyoforganizations,wefoundthatonlythreefirmssentusahighvolumeofcommercialemail overaperiodofsixmonths.That’sright:99.6%ofthecompanieswesubscribedtoheldtruetotheirprivacypoliciesanddidn’tspamus.However,therewereotherwidespreadproblems,asyou’llseebelow. Three Spammers Caught In the Act Thethreefirmsresponsibleforourinboxesreceivingahighvolumeofemailwhileignoringourunsubscriberequestswere: http://www.prizeomatic.co m http://www.freebiepeople.co m http://www.memolink.co m Subscribingtotheemailnewslettersatthesethreewebsitesresultedinusreceivingaveryhighvolumeofcommercialemailsovertheperiodofseveralmonths.Ourattemptstounsubscribewereeffectivelyignoredbyallthree.Thevolumeofemailwereceivedwas:187,323,and67emails,respectively,overaperiodofsixmonths. Ifyoutakealookatthesethreesites,theseresultsshouldn’tseemsurprising.Anysitethatfocusesonfreebies,“freeprizes”orcheapgiveawaysisobviouslyinthebusinessofcollecting(andprobablyselling)emaillists.NopersonintheirrightmindwouldmistakeoneofthesesitesforaFortune500firm,andexperiencedInternetusersaretoosmarttofallfor“freebie”gimmicks.
