AUDIT COMMITTEE – 15TH JUNE 2010 Report of the Deputy Director of Programmes and Resources ITEM 12 MEMBERS’ ALLOWANCES CLAIMED 2009/10 Purpose of the report To note the amounts claimed by members of the Borough Council under its Members’ Allowances Scheme for 2009/10. The role of the Audit Committee is to provide part of the Council's assurance/compliance framework. Item 18 of the functions of the Committee listed in the Constitution is to consider the Council's compliance with its own and other published standards and controls. Recommendation 1. That the amounts claimed by councillors be noted; 2. That any issues arising from the report be referred to officers for investigation. Background The Council’s Members’ Allowances Scheme is overseen by an Independent Remuneration Panel which reviews it annually and makes recommendations as to the maximum amounts that can be claimed. Regulations require the Panel to produce a report making recommendations as to: • the amount of basic allowance; • whether special responsibility allowances should be received and, if so, the duties to which they should apply and the amounts of those allowances; • whether an allowance relating to the expense of arranging for the care of children or dependents should be available (carers’ allowance) and, if so, the amount of that allowance; • whether travelling and subsistence allowances should be available and, if so, the duties for which they ...
