Annales de Géographie - Année 1976 - Volume 85 - Numéro 468 - Pages 178-205Abstract. Soviet tourists can choose between free tourism and organized tourism. Their conditions and the Soviet terminology are studied and defined in lexicon. The Caucasian environment (relief, climate, thermal springs, proximity of the sea) explains it is one of the most touristic regions in the USSR. Now, vacationers from the whole Union frequent above all the spas of the northern side, especially Piatigorsk and the «Mineral Water» region, founded as early as the beginning of the XIXth century. Since 1950, the mountains really develop tourism winter sports and mountaineering (Elbrouz, Dombai). Tourism influences the regional economy (creation of sovkhozes and of supply plants) as well as the distribution and the activities of the people. Numerous projects of equipment, transportation and resorts are under way or planned (railway tunnel, Russian-French skiing resort of Arkhiz...).
