Gull Wing Lace Socks
Materials: All of the socks are made with 4 ply sock yarn. Specific yarn requirements will be
listed with each pattern
Needles: All of the patterns use a set of four 2.75mm (US 2) double point needles
Tension: 30 sts = 4" on 2.75mm (US 2) needles worked over stocking stitch. Some of the
pattern stitches used will yield a different tension, so be sure you check your tension over
stocking stitch.
Basic Pattern Instructions:
You can use these instructions to make a pair of basic socks in any 4ply yarn. The pattern for
the lace socks shown, will follow.
Cast On: Cast on 64 sts and divide onto 3 needles as follows: 16 sts on the 1
st
needle, 32
sts on the 2
nd
needle, and 16 sts on the 3
rd
needle.
Heel Turning: All of the patterns have the same heel instructions. Shape your heel as
follows:
Work across the sts on the 1
st
needle. Now you will only be working back and forth on the 32
sts of the 2
nd
needle for the heel.
Row 1: *Slip 1, K1* Repeat to the end.
Row 2: Slip 1, Purl the remaining 31 sts.
Repeat these two rows, 16 times. 32 rows.
Next row: K18, K2tog, turn to the wrong side. Slip the 1
st
st on the left needle, P4, P2tog,
turn to the right side. Slip the 1
st
st on the left needle, K5, K2tog, turn to the wrong side. Slip
the 1
st
st on the left needle, P6, P2tog, turn to the right side.
Continue turning back and forth in this manner, working one more st per side until all of the
sts on the needle have been worked, ending on a wrong side row. 18 sts remain.
Divide these 18 sts in half onto two needles and slip the sts from the other two needles onto
one.
With the right side facing, knit across the 9 sts of the next needle. This will bring you to the
new starting point for the rounds of the foot section. Knit across the 9 sts of the following
needle then pick up and K 16 sts along the left edge of heel onto this needle. Work across the
32 instep sts of the next needle in pattern stitch. Pick up and K 16 along the right edge of the
heel and knit the remaininng 9 sts onto this needle. This will now bring you to the beginning
of all following rounds with the needles and sts set up as follows: 1
st
needle, 25 sts, stocking
stitch. 2
nd
needle, 32 sts, pattern stitch. 3
rd
needle, 25 sts, stocking stitch.
Work the next two rounds as follows, 9 times:
Rnd 1: Knit to last 2 sts of the 1
st
needle, K2tog. Work 32 sts of 2
nd
needle in pattern st. SSK
first 2 sts of the 3
rd
needle then knit to end.
Rnd 2: Work all sts as established without decreasing.
When there are 16 sts on the 1
st
and 3
rd
needle, continue as established without further
decreasing until the foot is the desired length, less 1 ½ inch.
Toe Shaping: Work all sts in stocking stitch.
Rnd 1: K to last 3 sts of the 1st needle, K2 tog, K1. K1. SSK then K to the last 3 sts of the 2
nd
needle, K2tog, K1. K1, SSK, K to the end of the 3
rd
needle.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Repeat these 2 rnds 5 more times. 40 sts remain.
Repeat Rnd 1 only, 5 times. 20 sts remain.
Slip the sts of the first and third needles onto one. Graft the sts together.
Grafting Instructions: Hold the two needles with the sts to be grafted together. The one
closest to you will be referred to as the front needle and the one furthest from you will be
referred to as the back needle. With the right side of the knitting facing you, break the tail end
at least three times the width of the sts to be grafted. Thread the tail end through a blunt yarn
darner and position the yarn so that the tail end is on the right.
Sew into the first st of the front needle as if to purl, pull yarn through while leaving the st on
the needle. Sew into the first st of the back needle as if to knit, pull yarn through while leaving
the st on the needle.
*Sew into the first st on the front needle as if to knit, letting it slip from the needle, then sew
into the next st on the front needle as if to purl, letting it remain on the needle. Pull yarn
through Sew into the first st on the back needle as if to purl, letting it slip from the needle, then
sew into the next st of the back needle as if to knit, letting it remain on the needle. Pull yarn
through*..
Repeat from * to * to last st remains on each needle. Insert the darner into the st on the front
needle as if to purl. Draw yarn through. Insert the darner into the st on the back needle as if
to knit. Draw yarn through. Let both sts slip.
Please read through the basic pattern at the beginning of the leaflet for directions for cast on,
needle set up, heel turning and toe shaping.
Cast on according to basic pattern and work cuff as follows:
Cable Twist Cuff
Rnd 1: Work in K2, P2 rib
Rnd 2: *K2, P2, Right Twist as follows: K2tog while leaving both sts on the left needle, K into
the 1
st
st again before transferring to the right needle, P2*. Repeat to end of rnd.
Rnd 3 : Work in K2, P2 rib
Rnd 4: *Right Twist, P2, K2, P2* Repeat to end of rnd
Repeat these 4 rnds 3 more times, then repeat the first 2 rnds once more.
Note: The next round will adjust the number of sts for the patterned part of the sock. This is to
compensate for the looser tension of lace knitting.
Next rnd: *K2tog, K6*. Repeat to end of rnd, 14 sts on 1
st
needle, 28 sts on 2
nd
needle, 14 sts
on 3
rd
needle for a total of 56 sts.
Continue Leg section in Lace Pattern:
Rnd 1: *K1, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, SSK, K1* Repeat to end of rnd
Rnd 2: Knit
Rnd 3: *K2tog, yo, K3, yo, SSK* Repeat to end of rnd
Rnd 4: Knit
Repeat these 4 rnds until leg measures 8 to 9 inches from the cast on edge.
Next rnd: Adjust the stitch count as follows: Work 14 sts of 1
st
needle in lace pattern.
*Increase in next st, K6* across 28 sts of the 2
nd
needle. 32 sts on the 2
nd
needle.
Turn heel as given in the Basic Pattern, but count the last row worked as if it were the first row
of heel turning instructions. This sock will only have 28 instep sts that are worked in pattern
for the remainder of the foot.
When the foot section is 1 ½ inch less than the desired length, work next rnd as follows:
Knit 16 sts of the 1
st
needle. *Increase in next st, K6* across 28 sts of the 2
nd
needle. Knit 16
sts of the 3
rd
needle. This readjusts the stitch count back to 64 sts.
Shape Toe as given in the Basic Pattern Insstructions, grafting the last 20 sts together.
