Home Energy Audit Today American homes are chock full of appliances and conveniences that use electricity. We’re adding more all the time. Homes today use 21% more electricity than they did in 1978. Back then, houses were smaller and we used far less electricity. As our homes grow, electricity use is growing with them. Appalachian Power’s residential customers actually use more electricity than the national average, which is 949 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month. On average, our residential customers use more than 1,200 kWh per month. Air conditioning use has increased dramatically. And we have more electronics – computers, big screen TV’s, second refrigerators and many other electric appliances and devices. We rely more on electricity to power so many things in our homes. What can we do to lower our use and demand for electricity? It starts at home…with these Three Steps to Energy Savings: 1. Print this document. Walk through your home and complete the audit form below. This will give you a good look at the major pieces of your home energy situation. 2.
