It was first published inthe daily newspaper "Göteborgs Handels- och Sjöfartstidning", starting in February 1859. It also appeared as a booklater the same year, with the fifth edition in 1892. An English translation by W. W. Thomas Jr, "The last Athenian",appeared in 1869. The 6th through 14th Swedish editions appeared as volumes 5 and 6 of the author's collected works("Skrifter", 14 volumes).
