Coalition and Eternals Channel Tutorial Guide Prepared by Psych Ward for the Eternals ®(A City of Heroes Super Group on the Virtue Server) Hi gang. This tutorial was put together to help new & existing members of the Eternals get set up with Coalition and Eternals chat channels, allowing us to more easily communicate with one another across Super Groups and servers. Description of Channels First off, a quick description of each: • Coalition Chat: Because the Eternals consist of multiple super groups (currently the Eternals, Eternal Knights and Eternal Legends), we have implemented the Coalition Chat option in CoH to allow us to speak to one another regardless of which SG each of us happens to be in when we’re speaking. By speaking in this channel, anyone in any of the three groups can see your message, but only if they’re playing a character in that group at the time. • Eternals Channel: The Eternals channel is a global channel we set up specifically for the Eternals on Virtue. Since global channels allow anyone in them to communicate across servers with anyone else in the channel, regardless of which character they’re playing, we’ve created our own channel to make it easier to get in touch with one another in the event some people are playing alternate characters. Coalition and Eternals Channel
Tutorial Guide
Prepared by Psych Ward for the Eternals
(A City of Heroes
®
Super Group on the Virtue Server)
Hi gang.
This tutorial was put together to help new & existing members of the Eternals
get set up with Coalition and Eternals chat channels, allowing us to more easily
communicate with one another across Super Groups and servers.
Description of Channels
First off, a quick description of each:
Coalition Chat:
Because the Eternals consist of multiple super groups (currently
the Eternals, Eternal Knights and Eternal Legends), we have implemented the
Coalition Chat option in CoH to allow us to speak to one another regardless of
which SG each of us happens to be in when we’re speaking.
By speaking in this
channel, anyone in any of the three groups can see your message, but only if
they’re playing a character in that group at the time.
Eternals Channel:
The Eternals channel is a global channel we set up
specifically for the Eternals on Virtue.
Since global channels allow anyone in
them to communicate across servers with anyone else in the channel, regardless
of which character they’re playing, we’ve created our own channel to make it
easier to get in touch with one another in the event some people are playing
alternate characters.
Messages in this channel can only be seen by people in
the channel, and they appear with the sender’s Global Chat Handle (instead of
the name of the character they’re currently playing).
Adding Channels to Chat Window
Now that we have that out of the way, we’re going to first add each of these channels to
a tab in your chat window so that you can see text you type in that channel as well as
others’.
These channels are not automatically added to a chat window when you first
join the Eternals, but once you add them to a window they will be there each time you
log on afterward.
First, you need to pick which tab in which chat window you’re going to add the channels
to.
In my example below, I’m adding the channels to the
Bottom
tab in my bottom chat
window:

To add channels, right-click the tab you want to use and select
Edit Tab
from the menu
that appears.
The following screen will appear:
If the
Eternals
channel does not appear in the
Available Channels
section on the right of
this screen, you will need to ask a Founding or Senior member to invite you, as it is a
private channel.
The
Join Channel
button will not allow you to join.

Once you have both the
Eternals
and
Coalition
channels available, just select one of
them in the
Available Channels
menu and click the
Add
button, as so:
Once you have both channels added to the
Selected Channels
screen, it should look
like this:
With this, you’re done!
Click the
OK
button to exit this screen.

Chatting in Coalition and Eternals Chat
Now that you’ve added the channels to a chat window, you will be able to see all
Coalition and Eternals chat messages sent by other players.
“Great, but how do I send
messages myself,” you may ask.
Well, here you go:
Coalition Chat:
There are two ways to send messages to the Coalition channel.
First, you can select the small “C” above your message line near the bottom of
your chat window, like so:
As this can be time consuming (especially if you’re in the middle of a battle), I
prefer to instead just us the shortcut,
/c
, like so:
/c Hi Gang!
Anyone else in any of the Eternals super groups will see something like the
following:
Psych Ward [Eternal Legends]:
Hi Gang!
Note:
When you use a shortcut beginning with the slash key ( / ), remember you
don’t have to press Enter or click one of the small chat buttons like the
Coalition
button above; just type
/c
and your message and hit Enter.
Eternals Channel:
There are also two ways to speak in the Eternals channel.
One of these ways makes use of the
Active
chat tab.
Personally, I find this
difficult and time-consuming to use; it’s like the first option listed above for the
Coalition channel, just more annoying.
Instead, I’m going to show you the
shortcut to use for speaking in Eternals channel:
/send Eternals Hi Gang!

Note two things:
First, that there is no comma used after the channel name
(Eternals) like there would be if you were sending someone a /t message.
Secondly, that’s a lot to type just to say “Hi Gang!” to people on the Eternals
channel, don’t you think?
So, here’s another shortcut:
A keybind for talking in Eternals chat with just the
press of one key:
/bind e “beginchat /send Eternals “
Now, typing the above will not send a message; what this does instead is set a
key (in this case, the “E” key) to automatically put “/send Eternals “ in the
message section of your chat screen.
This saves a lot of time typing, since all
you’ll have to do to send a message to the Eternals channel is press E before
typing a message and pressing Enter.
You can bind this command to other keys as well; I’m not going to go into all of
the keybind options here, as there is a wonderful player-created tutorial available
on the official CoH forums for that kind of information.
If you’re interested, look it
up from the link available on the Eternals website.
Seeing Who Is On In the Eternals
An easy way to tell who is on in the Eternals is using the Eternals channel list.
You can
see the list by pulling up your
Friends
screen and clicking the dropdown menu to select
Eternals
:
The global chat handle of anyone logged into the game with access to the Eternals
channel will be displayed here.
