Abstract
A simulation model was developed for evaluating the high temperature effects in dry matter intake on dairy cows (Holstein Cebu crossbreed) in the Paraguayan Chaco. The model evaluates dry matter intake considering the relationships among forage dry matter intake and concentrate intake. In addition it assumes that cebu cows have a greater capacity to dissipate heat due to the difference in the number of sweat glands and their surface area. Daily milk yield and variation in body weight were the output variables used to evaluate the model. The required inputs were: body weight (kg)
crossbreed (3/4,5/8,1/2 Holstein)
temperature (°C)
wind speed (km/h)
availability and digestibility of forage
growth rate of forage
quantity and quality suplementation
and stocking rate. Results obtained with the model were compared to whose obtained experimentally (Singh and Bathtacharyya, 1991) and a low percentage of estimated error was found. The comparasion of means (energy intake) done with t student test did not show diferences (p>0.05). In addition the milk yield was compared using dairy farm data (La Blanca, Paraguayan Chaco). Model milk production and observed data (305 days) did not show differences with p >0.05.
