Important Things Every Truck Driver Should Carry on the Road
CDL schoolis a great place to learn about things like federal regulations and how to physically maneuver trucks in traffic. But there is a lot they cannot teach you in CDL school. For example, a few weeks spent in class cannot possibly prepare a new driver for what life on the road is actually like. That is something only time and experience can teach.
One of the things new drivers quickly learn about life on the road is that there are some items you just take for granted until you do not have them. It takes most experienced truckers at least a few months to accumulate all the things they need to handle the normal circumstances of daily life. Below are a few examples.
Shower and Toiletries Kit
A shower and toiletries kit is absolutely vital. Whether a driver stops at one of the big-name rest stops or chooses a mom-and-pop place instead, not having basic toiletries means having to pay higher prices at the cash register. Basic toiletries include things like soap, shaving cream and razors, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.
A lot of truckers recommend carrying a washcloth and towel as well. The ones truck stops provide are not always in the best condition. Sometimes they charge extra for them as well.
Basic Hand Tools
Basic hand tools are something truckers cannot live without. A new truck driver may hear something about hand tools in CDL school, but the details will not be forthcoming. So, what hand tools should the trucker have on board?
A good place to start are flathead and Philips screwdrivers. Next would be a pair of vise grips, an adjustable wrench, a pair of needle nose pliers, and an ample supply of both electrical and duct tape. And, of course, a good pair of leather work gloves is also important.
Digital Camera
Every truck driver should carry a digital camera on board. Cameras are indispensable for documenting any problems a driver may encounter on the road. For example, a broken pallet loaded oŶ the trailer despite the driǀer’s oďjeĐtioŶ should be photographed. That way there are no disputes on the other end should the receiver balk about the broken pallet.
High-Quality Flashlight
A lot of truck drivers consider their flashlights among their most important tools. Drivers need flashlights for everything from checking things under the truck to making sure cargo is properly secured. The thing about flashlights is this: you get what you pay for. The driver who only wants to spend a few dollars on a cheap flashlight is going to purchase something that cannot necessarily be relied on.
Power Inverter
We live in an electronic world that depends on electricity for everything we do. The new driver should consider acquiring a power inverter to convert the DC power from the truck to the AC power needed to run things like computers and hot plates.
If you are an experienced trucker with plenty of years under your belt, what kinds of things do you carry on board your rig? Undoubtedly your years behind the wheel have led to some pearls of wisdom you could share with younger drivers. You know what kinds of things are necessary for life on the roadthings they do not mention in CDL school.
AtC.R. England, we encourage all our drivers to be prepared. If LJou are Ŷeǁ to the professioŶ aŶd doŶ’t kŶoǁ edžaĐtlLJ ǁhat to ĐarrLJ oŶ ďoard the truĐk, doŶ’t ďe afraid to ask. There are ǀeteraŶ driǀers ŵore thaŶ ǁilliŶg to aŶsǁer LJour questions.
