EVALUACIÓN DEL HÁBITAT, LAS POBLACIONES Y EL ESTATUS DE CONSERVACIÓN DEL BARRIGÓN (CAVANILLESIA CHICAMOCHAE, MALVACEAE - BOMBACOIDEAE) (Habitat evaluation, population and conservation status of the “Barrigón” (Cavanillesia chicamochae, Malvaceae - Bombacoideae))

Resumen
Se evaluó el grado de amenaza de la Malvácea bombacoide Cavanillesia chicamochae Fern. Alonso, especie recientemente descrita y considerada endémica del cañón del río Chicamocha y zonas aledañas al cañón del río Sogamoso (Santander-Colombia). Se determinó la distribución geográfica y el hábitat de la especie, a partir de la información histórica local y del reconocimiento del área. Se diagnosticó el estado y la estructura de edades de sus poblaciones y se evaluó también su fenología. Paralelamente se caracterizó la vegetación acompañante y se analizaron las perturbaciones y/o los factores de amenaza que las afectan. Se censaron 256 individuos en diferentes altitudes (entre los 230 y 1100 m) y se establecieron cinco clases de edad, siendo las mejor representadas las plántulas con 118 individuos (46.1%), seguida de los adultos 1, con 70 (27.34%). El periodo reproductivo es anual, va desde finales de noviembre hasta inicios de marzo. La vegetación acompañante se encuentra representada por 100 especies, 86 géneros y 40 familias. El estatus de conservación se determinó de acuerdo con los criterios de la UICN versión 3.1 (2001) como en peligro de extinción (EN), ya que cuenta con un área de extensión de presencia de 972 km2 y un área real de ocupación de 251 km2. El área está sujeta a cuatro agentes de alteración (ganadería caprina, establecimiento de cultivos, inestabilidad del terreno e incremento en la extracción de plantas por coleccionistas).
Abstract
We estimated the degree of threat of the recently described Malvaceae-Bombacoideae Cavanillesia chicamochae Fern. Alonso, species considered endemic of the Chicamocha River Canyon and areas along the Sogamoso River Canyon (Santander-Colombia). We determined the geographical distribution and habitat of this species based on local historical information and the recognition of the area. The population’s state, age structure, and phenology were diagnosed. Alongside, the vegetation was characterized by analyzing the disruption and / or threat factors that affect them. A total of 256 individuals were recorded at different altitudes (between 230 – 1100 m) and grouped into five age classes. The best represented were the seedlings with 118 individuals (46.1%), followed by adults 1 with 70 (27.34%). The reproductive period is annual, from late November to early March. The surrounding vegetation is represented by 100 species, 86 genera, and 40 families. The conservation status was determined according to the IUCN criteria (2001) as endangered (EN) because it has a potential range of 972 km2 and has an actual occupation area of 251 km2. The area has four main agents of disturbance: goat rearing, crop establishment, land instability, and an increasing removal of plants by collectors.
