DIMORFISMO SEXUAL Y VARIACIÓN GEOGRÁFICA DE LA SERPIENTE CIEGA TYPHLOPS RETICULATUS (SCOLECOPHIDIA: TYPHLOPIDAE) Y DISTRIBUCIÓN DE OTRAS ESPECIES DEL GÉNERO EN COLOMBIA (Sexual dimorphism and geographic variation of the blind snake Typhlops reticulatus (Scolecophidia: Typhlopidae) and distribution of species of the genus in Colombia)

Resumen
El género Typhlops es de distribución pantropical. Por sus hábitos fosoriales, son serpientes pobremente representadas en las colecciones, dificultando trabajos de tipo taxonómico debido a un tamaño insuficiente de la muestra. Se revisaron 56 especímenes depositados en las colecciones de Colombia. En la actualidad, sólo tres especies de Typhlops son conocidas para Colombia (T. brongersmianus, T. minuisquamus y T. reticulatus). Se amplía el área de distribución geográfica en Colombia de T. brongersmianus y T. minuisquamus alcanzando las estribaciones centro-orientales de la Cordillera Oriental. Se reportan especímenes adicionales de T. reticulatus con distribución transandina. Los rangos merísticos y cuantitativos se encuentran dentro lo reportado por la literatura para T. brongersmianus. T. minuisquamus presenta un mayor número de escamas dorsales totales y variación en las formulas de escamas dorsales con respecto a lo reportado, y el porcentaje de la fórmula de escamas dorsales en T. reticulatus varío considerablemente con lo reportado en la literatura. Se encontraron diferencias significativas en la longitud total del cuerpo, teniendo hembras con mayor tamaño que los machos, así mismo se hallaron diferencias significativas en el número de escamas dorsales totales entre las poblaciones cis y transandinas. A pesar de presentar variación geográfica, no se puede argumentar que las poblaciones separadas geográficamente puedan representar unidades evolutivas independientes. Pos esta razón, es necesario realizar estudios morfológicos de mayor profundidad que puedan ofrecer mayor información y evidencia, ya que T. reticulatus representa un complejo de especies que necesita una revisión urgente dentro del rango de distribución geográfica de esta especie.
Abstract
Typhlops has a pantropical distribution. Due to their fossorial habits, these snakes are poorly represented in collections, making it difficult to take taxonomic data. I verified all Colombian collections and registered 56 specimens. Only three species of Typhlops are known for Colombia: Typhlops brongersmianus, T. minuisquamus, and T. reticulatus. The geographic distribution of T. brongersmianus and T. minuisquamus are extended to the eastern flank of the Oriental Cordillera. Additional records of T. reticulatus are given. The meristics and quantitative ranges are in agreement with literature data for T. brongersmianus. Typhlops minuisquamus has a higher number of total dorsal scales and variation in the dorsal scales formulae than previously reported as in T. reticulatus. I found significant intraspecific differences in the total body length, in which females are greater than males, and a cis- and trans-Andean difference in dorsal scale counts. Despite exhibiting a distinct geographical variation, it is not possible to argue that the geographically separate populations are independent evolutionary units. Future morphological studies including more specimens across the species distribution range are necessary.
