Description
Abstract
The objectiv of the present work, was to verify the in vivo digestibility, nitrogen balance and voluntary ingestion of urea treated barley straw, using sheep in metabolism cages. Two levels of urea (4 and 6 percent) and two levels of humidities (25 and 35 percent) were studied. The digestibility of the MS, MO and fibers showed a tendency to increase as the level of urea and that of humidity do it, but the results are not significant, being the biggest differences with the treatment of 6 percent of urea and 35 percent of humidity (8,5 points for the MO of diet and of 10,7 points for the MO of the alone straw). In the case of the fibers these differences are respectively of 14,8 and 16,3 for the FND and 20,9 and 21,8 for the FAD. The protein digestibility significantly decreased with the moisture increase and increased with urea utilization. The retained nitrogen was affected by urea addition, and the N retained/N ingested relation was affected by the water and urea. The retention for the untreated straw was inferior to the treated with 6 percent of urea.
