Consejos básicos para mejorar las traducciones de textos científicos del inglés al español (I) (Basic advice on how to improve scientific texts translated from English to Spanish (I))

Resumen
El lenguaje científico, tanto el traducido como el escrito originalmente en español, se encuentra muy contaminado con palabras y expresiones tomadas del inglés y trasladadas en forma directa al otro idioma. A fuerza de leer y oír una y otra vez muchas de estas expresiones, pueden acabar por parecer correctas. En este artículo, se da una decena de consejos básicos, todos ellos ilustrados con sus correspondientes ejemplos, para mejorar la escritura de cualquier texto científico, traducido o no. Los consejos son los siguientes: hay que documentarse
es preferible traducir un término que explicarlo
hay que procurar no usar construcciones nominales para expresar acciones
se debe usar la pasiva refleja en lugar de la voz pasiva
conviene evitar las redundancias (y los circunloquios)
hay que utilizar el régimen preposicional español, no el inglés
es necesario aprender a usar el gerundio
conviene no abusar de las aposiciones
se debe tener en cuenta que may y can no siempre se traducen, y es conveniente repasar las normas ortotipográficas del español, que no coinciden con las del inglés.
Abstract
Scientific language, whether it be translated or originally written in Spanish, is highly contaminated with words and expressions derived from English and passed on directly to the other language. From being read and heard over and over, many such expressions end up seeming correct. In this article, we give ten basic bits of advice, all of them illustrated with examples, on how to improve any scientific text, whether it be a translation or not. These bits of advice are as follows: prepare first
translate a term rather than explain it
avoid nominal constructions when expressing actions
use the reflex passive form of the verb instead of the passive voice
avoid redundancies (and circumlocutions)
use Spanish prepositions, not English ones
learn to use the gerund correctly
do not overuse appositions
remember «may» and «can» don?t always have to be translated
review Spanish orthotypographical rules, which are not the same as English ones.
