Theseus, Duke of Athens, was to marry Hippolyta, Queen
of the Amazons 1 . Theseus and his army had fought with the
Amazons and beaten them. Theseus fell in love with the
beautiful Hippolyta.
They were to be married in four days’ time. Theseus was
very happy. He wanted everyone to be happy and enjoy his
wedding.

THESEUS: Hippolyta, I wooed thee with my sword,
And won thy love doing thee injuries;
But I will wed thee in another key:
With pomp, with triumph and with revelling.
Egeus came to talk to the Duke about his daughter, Hermia.
He was very angry with her.
He wanted Hermia to marry Demetrius, a young nobleman.
Hermia didn’t want to marry Demetrius. She was in love
with Lysander.
It was the law of Athens that Hermia should do as her
father wished. If not, one of two things could happen to
her: she could be put to death, or she could be forced to live
in a nunnery 1 for the rest of her life.
Theseus told Hermia to obey her father. That was the law.

HERMIA:
But I beseech your grace that I may know
The worst that may befall me in this case
If I refuse to wed Demetrius.
THESEUS: Either to die the death, or to abjure
For ever the society of men.
Lysander loved Hermia and wanted to marry her. Lysander
had a plan.
He asked Hermia to go away with him. They could be
married. They would be far away from the law of Athens.
Hermia would not be put to death or sent to a nunnery.
He asked Hermia to meet him in the woods the next night.
She agreed.

LYSANDER: There, gentle Hermia, may I marry thee;
And to that place the sharp Athenian law
Cannot pursue us.
