In the distance, on the horizon, he sees
a river, thick haze over the Hula Valley,
soaring birds, and everywhere brown-gray
stone, green bushes, blue sky.
He’s looking down from heaven, he’s sure of it.

vanish. Zev hovers over his body. He
feels cold and wants to rub his arms.
He tries to remember his name, but
can’t. A voice draws him through the
shadows. Zev discovers he can move.
Over there.

He lifts a knife and cuts into a loaf of bread.
Jagged chunks spread out in front of him.
Crumbs scatter.
The man sits back
in his chair.
His voice draws Zev closer.
Zev can make out one word.
