Mark Zuckerberg agaînst the world? Due to an incendiary editorial published in the New York Timesin May by one of its co-founders, Chris Hughes, Facebook found itself in the news again. In an article containing a mixture of personal anecdotes, strategic analyses and philosophical ideas, Chris Hughes calls for the dismantling of the Facebook group. In particu-lar, he condemns the purchase of Instagram and WhatsApp, which allowed the group to eliminate its competition, thereby becoming a virtual monopoly. Another issue highlighted by Hughes is the censoring of some messages without warning by Mark Zuckerberg, in the name of citizen protection. Themea culpaof the co-founder of Facebook — who sold his shares in 2012 — is a warning bell over the excess of power in the hands of only one man.
Chris Hughes’ editorial, featured in the media worldwide, comes during a climate of deance towards GAFA, in Europe in particular. Indeed, efforts by the European Union to protect its citizens against the tech giants have intensied in recent months. In addition to personal data protection, the regulation of illicit and violent online content on digital platforms has become a priority. Legislation adopted by the European Parliament in the wake of the Christchurch shooting, requiring data platforms to remove terrorist related content within one hour of notication, is controversial. For some, the line between content regulation and censorship is very ne indeed.
