6 We lco me to the Plant Clinic Put simply , this is a lo ve ltte r to l iving vibra ntl y.
H ealing is no joke . It can be uncomf ortable, messy and all- consuming, and it is certainly a nonlinear undertaking. The journey of healing is much lik e the metaphor of peeling an onion: healing lies within ev ery la yer , and as we peel each one back, we get closer t o the heart. In uncov ering the la yers, we begin to change our perc eptions and expr essions of ill hea lth. W e awaken to see the patte rns, the stories, the f eelings he ld within ourselves. As a clinical pra ctitioner I witness all sorts of pre sentations, re velati ons, breakd owns and bre akthroughs. Thr oughout any gi ven wee k in clinic, there will always be a myriad of lov ely clients sitt ing in fro nt of me sharing their health stories, r anging fr om longsta nding chronic conditions to acute complaints. I hav e learnt that my own health challen ges and experiences ha ve shaped me as a pra ctitioner , and my ability to understand, guide and hold the space for others mov ing through their health challenges stems dir ectly fr om my own expe riences. Ye ars ago, I personally went thr ough a t errifying chapte r of burnout. I had been moving fa st in many aspects of my life ; emotionally I was fr ayed, physically I was weary . Changes needed to be made in my lif e. I felt the nudg e of a physical sympto m, yet I did not fully listen in. I ha ve le arnt the hard way that we oft en do this; as a coping mechanism, we ignore the messages of our bodies. Pe rhaps we cannot quit e look at it or w e are n’t quite re ady to hear it. We look away , wipe our hands of it, dust ourselves of f and ke ep going. For me, this was a gr ave m isstep. My physical symptom s hit me like a bus. Litera l wave s of panic shook my body , yet my min d was still. W aves of anxiety washed thr ough me . I wa s feeling out of my body , sped up and shaky . Cortisol rushes consumed me, and I re ally could not do much to k eep them a t bay . I went dow n allopathic tre atment
7 WELCO ME TO THE PLANT CLINIC paths, with no answe rs and no solutions. I had no choice but to liste n to my body , to make changes and to allow myself the space to heal . Although the six Pillars to Thrive (p. 16 ) are age-old essentials, this is when I truly grasped the importance of these pra ctices. In my own dark est moments, I dived headfirst int o these pra ctices to heal my body . I drank the water it was thirsty fo r. I balanced my blood sugar with nourishing food, ea ting with determined consiste ncy to anchor my body . I connected to na ture a nd let her fill me up eve ryday , swinging in my hammock under the tre es and sitting in my garden . I move d my body eve r so gently when I was able . I list ened to my internal self- talk, adjusting each self-limiting thought with nothing but lo ve and gentleness. And I r este d. I rest ed so much; I cleare d my calendar . It was not easy , but I knew I needed to . Healin g demands a leve l of surrender , and surrender tak es a whole ne w shape when y ou re ally face the true meaning of the word . I leant heavily on plant medicine during this time, f ollowing m y own plant prot ocols morning, day and night. Adapt ogenic-rich herbals such as ashwagandha and re hmannia reshaped m y internal stre ss response . Nerv ine- rich herbals such as passionflow er , oat stra w and skullcap helped to gro und my nervous sys tem. They were potent calmers of the cortisol rushes. The y brought the ligh t of hope with swift impro vement s and feelings of resilience returning. I got better v ery quickly . Within three months. This may seem lik e a long time, but when yo u are a t roc k bottom, a r eturn t o full vitali ty within thre e months is its own kind of r adical. While this experience truly br ought me t o my knees, it also of fered me incredible in sights and cra cked open m y life in a really w onderful w ay. I set a new pace, I now honour rest and know my limits lo vingly , I lead with my heart and have learnt to not ov erexten d myself. The whole br eaking do wn to br eak through concep t is quite lite rally the epitome of my (albeit messy) dance with burnout. W or king with the plants allow ed me to g et to the v ery r oot of the issue. Ther e was no shortcut or quick fix. I wa s worn so thin that I had to build from the gr ound up . This w as deep healing. This book is not intended to replace individual ised pro fessiona l advice on healthcare and wellbeing, nor is it is intended to treat , diagnose or cure . It is r ecommended th at you consult y our natur opathi c practitioner , herbalist or GP when seeking healthcare support; health runs deep, and there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all appro ach. 8 In the Clinic Unsurprisingly , I work with many burnt-out people . It is a natura l side effe ct of our times, a modern epidemic of sorts. W e have s tray ed far fr om the rhyt hms of nature , from a tim e when the simple rising of the sun and the setting of the moon were our compass. Instead, we wake to alarms and live our lives with various f orms of technology dic tating our daily mov ements and schedules. How can we all keep up?! It’ s an incred ible thing to wa tch clients r eturn fr om the br ink of brutal burnout with the assistance of re stora tive her bs and the Pillars to Thrive (p. 16 ). Often, one particular sympto m, like poor e nergy , for exampl e, improv es with gentle int erven tions (such as herbs and re st), meaning fe wer energy dips in the day; then sleep deepens, and gr adually vitality is r egained. This is the pro cess of healing; one element aff ects anoth er , and the pieces of your inner puzzle unit e. One client had been dealing with chro nic bloating for a long ti me. She had tried eve ry diet, had seen all sorts of medical specialist s and undertake n invasiv e inve stigations with no r esults or impr oveme nts. After years, s he turned to the plants. W e discove red tha t her chro nic digestive bloa ting was more a r eflection of her internal emotional landscapes. H er resp onse to stre ss was an inability to digest, a classic irritable bow el syndro me–like symp tom. Once we had set up a herbal tr eatmen t plan – such as the Bloating Pr otocol on page 148 – t o lean on, incorpora ting digestive herbs such as chamomile, lemon balm and fe nnel to calm her belly and her str ess r esponse, w e had an incredible br eakthr ough. When her aw arenes s shifted to w orking with plants to support her process, sh e transf ormed her bloating w oes. My own plant pat h has been an example of science and spirit finding their way back to each other . I am a Bachelor- level herbalist. My tra ining was heavily clinical and science-base d – involving the study of bo tany , anatomy and physiology , pharmacology , symptomatol ogy , pathology and biochemistry of the body – alongside the sweet song of herba lism. Howe ver , when I embarked on the pa th of natur al medicine as an eager teenager , my first learnt system of healing w as energ etic healing, with its esoteric view of he alth. Since

11 IN THE CLINIC then, I hav e also dedica ted yea rs to my nutritional medicine studies, learning about the therapeutic benefits of food and the pow er in edible nourishment. I have merged m y years o f study and tra ining with my ye ars of clinical experiences, witnessing countless br eakthr oughs in m y clients’ ill health, working with them in r esto ring true health. What I am most certain of, is tha t you deserv e to hold all of the tools that are needed t o decode the messages being sent by y our body and being. Choosing the plant path tak es us deep i nto the riches of tr aditiona l folk medicine and ancestra l herbal thera peutics. W e return t o the old wa ys, marrying time-honoured appr oaches with cont emporary practices and forging new wa ys to w ork with plants to heal our bodies and beings. The ro ots of herbalism run deep,
