A
DATE
LAST
NIGHT!
CONFESSIONS OF A SECRET SINGLETON , BY THE SECRET SINGLETON
FOREWORD
Have you ever-heard people saying, how come a lovely girl like you is on your own? or it will happen when you least expect it. I can t tell you how many times people who are happily married or single say this to me. Who are you seeing now? You must be going out with someone! or What does your husband say? I seem to be asked this in the most public of places. The other day I was at the beauty salon having my nails done. The only thing you could hear was the television in the background and an acquaintance next to me enquiring about my love life. I didn t know what to say but I knew that all the other women in the salon had gone quiet to hear my response! The same thing happened when I was at a family party and an aunt asked me exactly the same question in front of a table full of people. I had come to the event without a man by my side. I would have thought it was pretty obvious the state of love my love life.
I ve been dating for a very long time in-between marriage and long-term relationships, dipping in and out of love but not finding my soul mate or the one due to circumstances beyond my control. Bad timing, bad health, or the relationship just ran its course. I ve always written down my experiences so when I do have the odd Is it me moment? after a bad date, I can read through my notes and realise I am normal; it s just the set of circumstances I find myself in. I know I m not the only one in this situation and that is why I wanted to share with you my rollercoaster dating life.
I m sure you will find within these pages some stories that you also can relate to. This might give you some comfort to know you are not unique, experiencing the mad and wacky people out there on the single scene. It happens to everyone whatever your age.
For many years I ve been told I should write a book about my dating experiences so for everyone who has been on my back to do this (especially my hairdresser) I ve finally put pen to paper and done what you have asked.
Occasionally I come across some really kind people who try to set me up on a date, as they can t believe there is no one special in my life. I don t think they really think about the match, the fact that I am a woman and he is a man should be enough to make it work. I really am grateful and I wish more people would get involved and help out their single friends. I think it s a great way to be introduced and I have a close girlfriend who met her second husband this way. People though don t always take into consideration the fact that when they introduce singletons the ramifications involved. He might have three young children who he looks after every weekend and she isn t around for babysitting as her offspring have grown up. Is he looking for a housekeeper instead of a girlfriend? Or if he hasn t had children even if he s sixty is he looking for someone to have his babies? Does she really want to have more children? Sleepless nights? Get fat and have swollen ankles? Or would she prefer a social life?
There is a woman I know who owns a shop that I used to like to frequent. Every time I popped in there she would say with a straight face that she must set me up with her brother who is on his own due to his divorce. I knew of him and he seemed to be a really nice man and I was looking forward to meeting him. Each time I would go in she would quiz me on my single status. I felt I was being cross-examined on my life. The most bizarre thing was that it never happened. To this day I hardly go into her shop any longer, as I feel so uncomfortable.
My advice in this book is based on my own personal journey and knowledge scanning over twenty-five years. From the many people I have met throughout these times that are on the same globetrotting experience as myself. I am neither a doctor nor a psychologist but I do speak from a wealth of knowledge.
I hope you gain from me some words of wisdom. This will help and encourage you to go forth and dip your toe into the dating scene where you can enjoy an exciting new world.
