Insights from Chapter 1

#1

The circumstances that bring mental illness to light are often a surprise to everyone involved. Sometimes it’s a friend or loved one, or perhaps someone you respected and admired from afar, who you never imagined to be struggling.

#2

We must be honest with ourselves about what’s going on in our hearts and minds, because getting honest with ourselves is a difficult task. If we can’t admit that we struggle with anxiety and depression, we will never be able to heal.

#3

Depression is extremely intelligent, and it will try to convince you to do the opposite of what’s best for you. It can take your deeply held values and throw them out the window, making you do things you wouldn’t do otherwise.

#4

The first step on the journey toward mental health is to understand and believe that you are not alone. Understanding and believing this is the first step on the journey toward mental health.

#5

There are so many of us who struggle with our mental health. It is not because we are failures or worthless, but because we suffer from a chemical imbalance in our brains or a trauma experienced in childhood.

#6

We are not designed to navigate this world alone, but in companionship with others. We are, by our very nature, social creatures. As the old African proverb says: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

#7

You must choose to believe that there is something good and beautiful and healing about you beyond your current suffering. This is a huge step, and it will be difficult. But you have to take it anyway.

#8

I want you to believe that things will get better, and that you are not alone. Reaching out for help is never a sign of weakness, but rather strength.

#9

The United States suffers from a shortage of psychiatrists. By 2030, the annual global cost of mental disorders is projected to be $16 trillion.
